Working as a photojournalist, I’ve been through war zones several times in the past five years. I was there at the height of the war in Afghanistan, during the fall of Konduz when the last Taliban stronghold in northern Afghanistan was destroyed. I was embedded with the U.S. Marines during the invasion of Iraq, and later worked unilaterally at a time when the sectarian violence intensified.

My heart was racing, and the immensity of it was so overwhelming that I simply couldn’t think. Was my camera on the right settings? Was my exposure correct? Was my flash putting out the correct amount of light? I could hardly process the information, which normally comes so naturally to me after having worked as a photojournalist for 13 years. Monday, I was sitting in the same hole that Saddam Hussein was hiding in less than 48 hours ago when he was captured by U.S. special forces.

Dear Family, Friends and Colleagues,

I had barely gotten off the airplane with a couple of hundred other nameless folk, dazed and a little stupid from too much travel, when I was met with a sampaguita lei and a bouquet of roses from a correct staff woman from the Philippine Department of Tourism.  I was then smoothly guided through immigration, had only to point at my luggage before someone retrieved it off the belt for me, and then was led outside where an air-conditioned vehicle awaited to whisk me to the historic Manila Hotel.  It was a dream.   Who am I?
